Ali Hasanbeigi, PhD
Founder and Director
Ali Hasanbeigi is the Founder and Director of Textile Sustainability Hub. He has over 15 years of international experience providing strategic analysis and technical research on energy systems efficiency, climate change mitigation, sustainability, smart manufacturing, emerging technologies, and technology and policy evaluation. Dr. Hasanbeigi obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in textile technology engineering, but in his PhD and Postdoctorate program, he focused on broader industrial energy efficiency and decarbonization. This unique set of background and expertise has helped him to conduct several groundbreaking work and publish high-impact reports on energy efficiency and cleaner production in the textile industry.
Dr. Hasanbeigi is also the Founder, CEO, and Research Director at Global Efficiency Intelligence, LLC, which is an energy and environmental consulting firm in San Francisco, California.
Before founding Textile Sustainability Hub and Global Efficiency Intelligence, Dr. Hasanbeigi was a research scientist in the Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he led the Low Emissions and Efficient Industry research group.
Dr. Hasanbeigi has extensive expertise in technical, market, policy, and economic aspects of cleaner production and sustainability in the textile and apparel industry. In the past 20 years, he has conducted numerous energy and environmental assessment in textile plants internationally, has trained hundreds of engineers from textile factories on energy efficiency and emissions reduction in different countries, has developed several energy-efficiency and cleaner production technologies guidebooks, and has developed several energy analysis tools for the textile industry. Dr. Hasanbeigi has also worked as an international consultant for the World Bank and UNIDO.
Dr. Hasanbeigi has around 150 publications with 35 peer-reviewed international journal articles, over 40 international conference papers, over 70 project reports, and nine energy analysis tools. Majority as lead author/developer. He also served as a contributing author for the Industry Chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s Fifth and Sixth Assessment Report on Mitigation of Climate Change. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in textile technology engineering and his Ph.D. in energy technology. He was also a postdoctoral fellow on industrial energy efficiency and decarbonization at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Dr. Hasanbeigi's selected publications can be found on GEI’s Publication page.
